Superintendent Message

Superintendent Message: Dr. Brian Bailey

It has been a tremendous honor to serve the Ravena-Coeymans-Selkirk community over the past 15 years. I have thoroughly enjoyed getting to know our dedicated staff, supportive families, and the thousands of incredible students who have walked through our halls during that time. Fifteen years may not seem like a long tenure in some places, but in a district that had experienced decades of rapid leadership turnover, it was significant. Frequent changes at the top can make it difficult to build stability, create a sense of safety, and focus on long-term progress. That’s why consistency has been such an important part of my work here.

When I joined RCS as high school principal in 2010, I became the longest-serving principal since 1996 after just three years. In 2013, I was honored to step into the role of assistant superintendent for curriculum and instruction, and in 2017, I became superintendent of schools. By the end of my fourth year in that role, I was the district’s longest-serving superintendent in 25 years.

As I now prepare to step into the next chapter of my life, I want to express my deepest gratitude. Thank you to those who first entrusted me with a leadership role in 2010. Thank you to those who supported my continued service through these fifteen meaningful years. There is always more work to be done, and I hope the next leader is experienced, sticks to it, and can build on the foundation we’ve worked hard to create. RCS has a bright future ahead, and I will always cheer it on with pride. Thank you for the opportunity to be part of your story.

Input Sought About New Distraction-Free School Implementation

Next school year, a new law in New York State will require students to keep their personal smart devices put away during the school day, from the first bell to the last. This includes cell phones, smart watches, earbuds, and other connected tech.

On Monday, June 23, the District will send out a survey to families and students to gather feedback regarding our community's thoughts on smart device use.

RCS Welcomes First Student Members to Board of Education

RCS Welcomes First Student Members to Board of Education

Starting this year, a new state law took effect, encouraging student involvement in school decisions. The law requires New York school districts to include at least one student representative on their Board of Education. At RCS, we took this opportunity to engage students directly by holding a student-led election.

Junior Owen Smith and Ninth grader Haiqa Usmani were elected by their peers for this exciting new role. Both students will serve as non-voting members, offering valuable insight and representing student perspectives.

Owen and Haiqa will be sworn in at the July 9th Board meeting and begin working with Board members soon after.

The RCS Central School District is proud to support this new chapter in student involvement and looks forward to the positive impact that Owen and Haiqa will bring to the RCS community! Read the full article here.

Capital Improvement Projects Are Underway!

As we wrap up the school year, our Capital Improvement projects are shifting into high gear. This summer, RCS facilities and parking lots will see a number of important upgrades aimed at improving safety, accessibility, and functionality across our campuses.

We encourage families and students visiting our campuses over the summer to stay informed by regularly checking our district website and ParentSquare for updates specific to each building.

Please Note:

Work on the Pieter B. Coeymans Elementary parking lot is anticipated to begin on Monday, June 23. This project will include resurfacing the front entrance, main parking lot, and bus lane. In addition, new parking spaces will be added to improve accessibility for staff and visitors.

This work is not expected to interfere with parent pick-up or drop-off during the final week of school.

Thank you for your patience and support as we continue to enhance our facilities for the entire RCS community!

Digital Report Cards Coming 2025-26

RCS will be moving to digital-only report cards and progress reports for our middle and high school students beginning in the 2025-26 school year. Information on your student's progress is already available in our SchoolTool Parent Portal.

SchoolTool is the Ravena-Coeymans-Selkirk Central School District student information management system, allowing students, families, and staff to access information on schedules, attendance, assignments, and more.

Looking Towards Summer

FUN (Feed Ur Neighbor) Summer Kids Programs

This summer, families are invited to pick up free food every Monday from 6:30 to 7:30 p.m. at The Church of St. Patrick, starting June 30 and continuing through August 25, 2025.

The FUN Summer Kids Programs are made possible thanks to the generous support of the Seymour Fox Memorial Foundation, STARS Intergen Corp., a donation from The RCS Association of Churches’ FUN Walk to Fight Hunger, and The Carpenter’s Table—a monthly coffee house hosted by The Congregational Christian Church of Ravena.

For more details, please refer to the program flyer.

Summer Fun and Summer Food!

Kids and teens ages 18 and under can get free, nutritious summer meals at nearby places like parks, community centers, and libraries. Meals include healthy foods like fruits, vegetables, grains, and protein.

In late June, families can use the following tools to find sites nearby:

  • Use the map on SummerMealsNY.org

  • Call 211 or 1-866-3-HUNGRY

Summer meals are meant to work hand-in-hand with Summer EBT, a program that provides food benefits for each eligible child during the summer months. Families can use Summer EBT benefits to buy food at grocery stores, farmers markets, and other retailers that accept EBT.

Key things to know about Summer EBT:

  • Families will receive a one-time payment covering the whole summer, not a recurring monthly payment.

  • Most eligible children will receive Summer EBT benefits automatically, but some will need to apply. This webpage explains who will automatically receive benefits and who will need to apply.

  • Benefits should be used quickly, as they will be removed from the benefit card 122 days after they are loaded onto your card.

  • Immigration status does not affect eligibility.

Together, summer meals and Summer EBT help ensure kids have access to nutritious food while school is out. Visit SummerMealsNY.org to find summer meals near you and to learn more about Summer EBT.

UAlbany Offering Pre-Collegiate Summer Camp Program

The University at Albany is sponsoring more than 20 engaging camps in areas such as STEM, Art, Writing, History, and eSports. These Pre-Collegiate Summer Camps, which begin in July, will offer an exciting opportunity for students ages 13–18 to explore academic interests, develop new skills, connect with peers, and have fun in a supportive university environment. We are sharing this information with our families and educators in our district, as these programs are a fantastic way for students to prepare for future academic success while engaging in hands-on learning experiences. Learn more about the camps here.

PBC Starbees Café Makes the Local News!

Pieter B. Coeymans’ very own Starbees café reopened earlier this June with a brand-new storefront! What began as a mobile coffee cart has now transformed into a cozy café space just outside the STEAM room.

Run by students in grades K–5, Starbees is a life skills project where students practice language, social, math, and communication skills by selling coffee, tea, and hot chocolate to staff on Friday mornings. Proceeds go toward a charitable cause chosen by the students themselves.

We’re excited to share that Starbees was recently featured on News Channel 10!
